My Theme song:

GREEN DAY - "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams"

I walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But it's home to me and I walk alone

I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Where the city sleeps
and I'm the only one and I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk a...

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I walk alone

Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Aaah-ah,
Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Ah-ah

I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line
Of the edge and where I walk alone

Read between the lines
What's fucked up and everything's alright
Check my vital signs
To know I'm still alive and I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk a...

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I walk alone

Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Ah-ah, Aaah-ah
Ah-ah, Ah-ah

I walk alone
I walk a...

I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk a...

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I walk alone...

Been really having a ball since exams were over. Failed one subject so i'll be resitting a paper in mid january (Dang!!).

It could be worst.

The end is near

2 papers down. 1 more to go on the 12th of Nov. Can't wait to just savour that weekend after completing my degree. Been pretty busy procrastinating over the preps for my final paper. Should really buck up.

I wonder what should i do after that?

"Out of the frying pan, into the fire"

Yeap thesis report was done. But then there's a 20% electromagnetic lab exam on monday as well as my presentation draft. Actual presentation is on wednesday. And the project demonstration is on Friday. Oh wait.. assignments are due on thursday and friday too.

And next friday is the first exam. Monash has to give the students at least one week study break. That's coming from an expert for somebody who's been in Monash for 5 years.

"The Phantom Menace"

I'm delayed in my submission of my draft thesis. My void filling algorithm is still buggy. And i just found a memory problem somewhere. Not very fun printing out 240 structs with each having like 4 parameters and analyzing it.

Because of the time constraints i'm forced to used smaller time slots and lines to illustrate the performance of the switch.

Cheers to myself for landing myself in deep soup.

Note to all the other people out there doing thesis. If you do have a chance to simplify your project title, please to so and then over perform. Otherwise you'll be in the shits like me.

Bit Torrent Explained

Bit torrent is a swarm downloading application that uses the portions of the downloads of users to distribute among other users. It enables more throughput as the traffic is managed centrally, but doesn't burden the server like typical file server.

There are many torrent file applications out there, but i've found azureus to be the most user friendly as it enables novices to use it as well as pro's to play around with it, once you understand on how to optimise the downloads. Take note that azureus uses java, so you have to download the jdk from java.com first before you install the application.

Bit torrent files can be taken from torrent depositories like suprnova.org , animesuki.com and baka-updates.com. Suprnova is the ultimate source for me for anything, movie, series, music albums, ebooks, comics. Whereas the other 2 are for the latest anime.

Take note that the performance of downloads is also affected by your upload contribution, if you're too stingy with your bandwidth, your downloads may suffer from it. Also take note there are downloaders and seeder. Preferably the larger the ratio between seeder to downloaders, the better likelyhood of completing a download fast.

Have fun with your downloads, you'll never need a vcd seller anymore because even most of the cinema cam shots of latest movies can be downloaded of suprnova. There isn't any porn there, so you should consider another application like emule .

Emule is a splice of kazaa and bit torrent in terms of fair file sharing, and secured packetization and CRC checking. It is unfair to newbies as you have to increase your rank interms of uploads and the number of files you share. I prefer this way more than kazaa as the torrent community is quite proactive interms of reporting false files.

Happy downloading.

Working progress

Variable length switch has been completed and it's accuracy has been confirmed(WoO HoO!!) . Now have to implement other traffic models. Exponential and Pareto, which on paper and excel looks good, problem is that i don't have much to compare the findings with.

Dr. Chia says that it's ok to work with what i have because i have some verification that it works. 2 weeks and counting, for completion, so have to get results out in a few days to try implementing void filling algorithm. Just when i thought work couldn't be more fun.

Looking forward to my weekly walks with Norwin in the Bukit Kiara trail, who knows what other beings of beauty that we might bump into.

Cheers

Coding Hell/Heaven

With just 5 hours of sleep, woke up at 4.30 am , again , i think i do have sleeping disorders. Got a coffee, watched Naruto 99.

Coded till 11 got to uni to get my 40 gig HD that i left in the signals lab(stupid me!). Then met up with Tzu Chjeh and Navin. Got down to business, somehow... i now finally see the logic behind meetings with agendas, planned agenda's. Nobody should ever ask me to make an important decision when i don't even get the story straight. Black and white in point form is just so easy to understand.

Had a bowl of laksa with Melissa. Then came back home to code... till 6, missed my intended meeting with Dr. Chia at 10 and 3 because i couldn't get the code to work.

Rule 7 was broken as if loops go past 7 layers(8 or 9 for me), things just start getting messy. And for me, variable just seem to empty themselves. Got the code simplified to 4 layers and got the switching to work. Now i wish for the one month holiday which i wasted. Sigh, now to check if buffer depth is accurate, and if that is ok, then it's time to run simulation and pray that things won't break (they usually do).

Too late to see Dr. Chia, with nothing to show(slap myself). Drove to uni to take Marina to Manhattan fish market. Just wanted to eat something nice. Came back in time to follow Jen get his new camera. I hate sales people that aren't competent. If you're not good in sales, what else can you do? Went to mamak and then i'm back.

Time for sleep. Need 12 hours this time , oh please no interuptions.

Do take note that most of the graduates are still unemployed. You have a scholarship for with tutoring thrown in as extra pocket money for yourself. Can you opt to go without tutoring?

Sometimes we should instead of thinking of what we have experienced and what we own rather than focusing on what we still lack.

Yes it can get alot worse. But it's the ability for us to swallow it down no matter how bitter and doing it with grace that enables us to grow from the experience.

VALEN - VAriable LENgth packet switch simulator

After completing the purely fixed length section of the simulator, now i have to get it to work using a new simulation time.

Still stuck at getting the same results as the previous engine. Buffer seems to fill up very fast and doesn't seem to empty the buffer for other new incoming packets.

I have one more day to get this fixed. Need to get going towards the Void Filling as soon as possible. And need to get the other packet generation algorithms up and running.

It's been a long night. And i definitely have to shut down. Jen's bday is tomorrow so i'll be heading to bangsar at night. My work in the day time had better be justified.

Cheers y'all

The things people do!!!

I volunteered quite a while a go to install my lecturer's research xeon machine with fedora. Now that another lecturer needs it for installing matlab. The IT staff took it for testing and found out somehow that it couldnt' be used for installations. So he decided to reformat and reinstall it with Red Hat 7.3!!!!!!

Anyways, the distrobution apparently doesn't support the onboard ethernet card. He could have gotten the drivers for it, but dell apparently says that they don't have support for Linux. Don't know whether dell have any linux support for their PCs. Anyways the IT dude wants to reinstall it again with Fedora. Luckily I've loaned the disc to somebody else(He's asking for it). Because i think it's his job to get it done. And nonsense such as the mirrors are not working are bullshit, he just doesn't realise that there's a 50 meg cap on http file transfer size. And don't get me started with the dell PCs with 640 x 480 resolution in my engineering lab. That's even more idiotic.

Cheers

Good Times in Melaka

Been in Melaka for the past 2 days, staying with Julian. We left on Saturday late and arrived straight at the shop we were helping to set up.

We then proceeded to dinner and then back to the shop to install a few games. We had issues with NFS Underground as it kicked the PC's back to windows. Hopefully we'll have that fixed by today. We got the patches downloaded as well as the new video card drivers.

On sunday, no work could be done as Julian was down with diarrhea. So i took the oppertunity to explore Melaka on my own. Wanted to watch Cronicles of Riddick, but backed out because i think i would enjoy walking the town more.

I walked for about 4 hours as well as managing to taste the Chicken Rice Ball, Durian Cendol, and some nonya deserts. Man was i full!!!

I met up with Kar Ping, (Kar Chuan's brother) and his friend for a drink. (will upload pictures later)

Had dinner and went for a drive because the shop was closed. Found a few new prospective locations to set up cyber cafes.

(To be continued)

Donation Button

This is for the next fool that complains my computers is inadequate. I'm using a Celeron 366, an AMD K6-2 and an AMD Athlon 750 (which half works). The only one that i bought brand new was the Celeron 366, the rest were 2nd hand or free by doing favours for people. Those that do come and can't stand my functional babies will just get this blog message in return.

So if you think it's slow, help me get one by donating a dollar. I'll be saving you your energy, thoughts processes and saliva and you can save me the heartache every time somebody bitches about my babies. Put your mouse where your mouth is:

I would like to thank Scott Kurtz of PVP online as my inspiration to do this.

Japan GT @ Nissan Show Room

Went there for a look-see of the big hype that i missed during the weekend. I was lucky enough to be the first to register. Me and Jen had the whole place to ourselves till the big crowds arrived, and some left before the drivers and race queens came. The fools....

Oh well my gain their loss....

Man i wish exams were always this exciting, after brunch returned to uni to prepare for my papers.

?Why Free Software usability tends to suck??

I find this article very helpful and i sympathize with the dillemma. I'll swallow my hurtful words next time i start bitching about GUI interfaces.

Unfortunately there isn't much time for me to convert over from my Mandrake KDE over to Fedora's Gnome, because my darling of a laptop, has finally died.

Farewell my dear Presario 700. May you now join your others in the Compaq hell that you came from hopefully to be resurrected in a better, faster, less hotter, less heavy model.

On another note, if any of you dude out there have a functional laptop out there that you don't use anymore. How about passing one along this way?

Cheers

"I suddenly feel a part of my soul is missing.."
The Lazerus Effect:
Volume 1 : The hardware

The Lazerus is a term which describes the raising of the dead. With the advent of faster games and steeper OS requirements, people have always had the notion that getting the latest OS with the latest hardware specs was the right or kiasu(chinese term for trying to be elite) thing to do. This of course is untrue from my point of view. My computers solely consists of hand-me-downs. To them, these machines are obsolete, "dead". These machines are still functioning and are performing well.

I'll approach this topic in clear steps from a bottom-up approach starting with the hardware. Make sure that each component of a system unit (the box). Use this term, yes it means the box, i hate it when people keeps on saying that their CPU's aren't working. At this point it would actually help to have spare components around or another computer around to verify your findings.

The mobo (motherboard) is the part of the "trinity" of main hardware that should work. The others are RAM and CPU. Usually it's hard to comeby with replacement components, depending on the age of the component.

Make sure that the power supply is working, then make sure that the PC speakers are plugged in to the mobo. If there are the signature beeps, those are actually good signs that your mobo is still functioning. Take note that if nothing happens and the power supply smells like burnt electronics (trust me you'll know it when you smell it) turn off the power.

Ample amount of RAM can compensate for the lack in processing power. Check that all the RAM slots are working. Then proceed with the PCI peripherals like sound cards and network cards.

Install the IDE devices and make sure that the data ribbons are properly connnected, otherwise your bios is not gonna see any devices. This is an issue with old hardware that don't have the data ribbons labelled.

Remember that your system may not be much and may feel dodgy considering that you got some parts for free or at dirt cheap prices. But the sum is greater than its parts. The end goal is a system that meets your computing requirements.

Next: OS choices, Windows or Linux?

PC Gemilang isn?t what its all hyped out to be.

Here is an attachment for a dell site for their dimension 2400. Going for USD 399(RM1516).

It has an Intel Celerom 2.4Ghz (400MHz FSB), 17 inch monitor , 40GB ATA/100 Hard drive, 128MB Shared DDR SDRAM at 333MHz (Performs at 266MHz for 400FSB systems). It comes with a 48x CD burner with Sonic RecordNow. It comes typical with a one year warranty from dell (which is better than what Pikom could offer) and also free delivery.

I think because of the big brand, and it?s reputation for good after sales service, it makes the purchase of PC Gemilang questionable. It also solves the problem of using the Win XP with Malay and the questionable sum offered by Microsoft for an upgrade to the English version. ?17 inch monitor? also another one. I guess it all depends on whether people are penny-wise or pound-foolish in terms of the whole package.

I've gotten my groove back!!!

It's been a while since i've been so pumped at training. i've met somebody that has further impressed me to continue improving myself. Sparred twice with a brown belter that has everything, same height, faster than me, has more reach than me, and he's younger. So much more potential, i'm jealous.

In the first match which was a tie, he was worned out by weight class (i'm 94 and he's 60+?), and i was keeping my distance with my kicks that weren't scoring but he was still blocking nonetheless. 2-all, i won because he jogai-ed (left the court). Ok difference of 1 foul. But the whole process, the idea that this person had the potential to be better, boiled my blood. Just when "Yame!" was called (stop the fight), he had fallen... with an open oppertunity to finish off. The at that instant i saw myself, in third person.

He will get better and so will I. I look forward to the next sparring meet.
